To pair an accessory, it must be in discovery mode and have a Bluetooth name that matches its manufacturer’s instructions. You can control many of Bluetooth’s settings from the Control Center. To disconnect a device, either turn it off or unpair it.

1. Turn on Bluetooth:

Bluetooth enables devices like wireless headsets and speakers to connect to your iPhone. It is also a way to transfer files between Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as a computer and a printer. It can also be used to control your phone using a remote, for example playing music or answering calls from your car stereo.

The technology uses radio waves to allow Devices to communicate with each other over a short range and is separate from Wi-Fi (which operates on different frequencies). While the Bluetooth signal’s range is limited, it’s still possible to maintain a connection across rooms in your home or even outdoors.

Before two devices can pair for the first time, they must be in a special discovery mode, which differs by accessory. Some devices require you to input a PIN or passcode to pair. After that, they will remain paired as long as both are within range.

The Bluetooth icon appears in the Control Center on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad when it’s turned on. To turn off the feature, tap Settings > Bluetooth. To view a list of presently paired devices, tap Bluetooth in Settings. If you see a device you don’t want to pair with, tap the information button next to the name and select Forget This Device. You can also change the default playback destination for audio in an app, such as Music, by tapping the playback controls and selecting the desired device.

2. Open Settings:

The Settings app is arguably the most important one on your iPhone. It has options for a lot of things, from changing your ringtone to controlling what apps can do on your phone. It can be hard to find, however. Thankfully, we have an easy trick to get you there.

If you want to use the new iPhone XS or XS Max’s Macro mode, which allows you to take incredibly close-up shots, you’ll need to enable it in your camera settings. You’ll also need to enable Action mode, which applies heavy video stabilization to hand-held shots — perfect for taking videos while on a run or in any other situation where it’s tough to hold the phone steady.

You can also customize how the iPhone displays notifications, change a password for Wi-Fi networks, and more in the Settings app. If you’re using a wireless carrier, this is where you can see your data allowance, and you can even allow more data for 5G connections to get higher-quality FaceTime and Apple Music video and better performance from some apps.

If you’re not going to be using a Bluetooth device again, you can remove it from your iPhone by opening the Settings app, selecting Bluetooth, and tapping the Info button next to the device name. From there, tap Forget this Device.

3. Tap Bluetooth:

You can use Bluetooth to connect your iPhone to a range of accessories, like headsets and speakers, so you can play music and videos wirelessly, make calls, and more. If you use an Apple Pencil or the Apple Watch, you can also pair them with your iPhone to get even more features from the devices.

You’ll need to have the Bluetooth accessory in discovery mode and set it up to pair with your device. If you’re not sure how to do this, check the instructions that came with the accessory or contact its manufacturer. To keep your iPhone and Bluetooth accessories safe, it’s best to use them at home or in private. Public wireless “hotspots” can increase your risk of someone intercepting the connection (see Securing Wireless Networks for more information).

Every Bluetooth device has a unique 48-bit address, but most people don’t know this. Instead, each device uses a friendly name that you can choose, which appears when another device scans for devices and in lists of paired devices.

If you don’t need a particular device anymore, you can disconnect it from your iPhone by opening the Settings app and tapping Bluetooth. Tap the i icon next to the device you want to remove, then tap Forget This Device in the pop-up menu. You can then reconnect the device at a later time.

4. Select the device you want to connect:

Bluetooth is a wireless technology that lets you connect devices like headphones, speakers, keyboards, and car kits to your iPhone. You can also use Bluetooth to play music and videos or to make phone calls. To set up a Bluetooth device, follow the steps for your accessory’s model. Some Bluetooth devices require a passcode or other security measure to pair.

You can choose to switch audio playback between your iPhone and your Bluetooth device, depending on the app you’re using. The default is to play audio on your iPhone, but you can change this by tapping the audio output in Settings or Control Center. You can also adjust your privacy settings, which affect who has access to your headset or other devices.

When you’re done with a Bluetooth device, be sure to disconnect it so that it doesn’t drain your battery. You can do this in the Bluetooth menu in Settings, or you can swipe down on the Lock screen or in Control Center to quickly turn off and on your device’s Bluetooth. To disconnect a Bluetooth device permanently, open the Bluetooth menu in Settings, find the device you want to remove, and tap the i icon next to it. Then, select Forget This Device.

You can connect up to eight Bluetooth accessories at the same time. If you’re having trouble pairing a Bluetooth accessory, try charging the device, placing it within 30 feet of your iPhone, and following the instructions for that accessory on how to enter discovery mode.
